Neighbours is losing a legendary character today

It’s officially the end of an era. Today, legendary soap character Harold Bishop is packing up his tuba and leaving Ramsay Street for good. Yes, after an incredible 22 years playing Harold, 70-year-old actor Ian Smith films his last scenes on the Neighbours set today, and his departure is so momentous that tuba players are even descending on the streets of Sydney to play the Neighbours theme tune and hand out “I heart Harold” memorabilia (OMG! We would love a keyring saying that). The character of Harold has had many classic moments over the years, including nearly dying in the Coffee Shop explosion, marrying gravel-voiced Madge, coming back from the dead as Ted-the-Salvation-Army-guy and strangling evil Paul Robinson. But it was his general Harold–ness, such as his bumbling manner and comedy “Ahhs” and “Ums” that made him such a icon. Sadly, Harold (the character, not the actor Ian Smith – he's fine) was diagnosed with cancer and will leave Erinsborough for Queensland (in the back of a cab, probably), which will be shown on our TV screens in April. Harold, you’ll be sorely missed… *sob* Are you a big Neighbours fan, and if so, what have been your favourite Harold moments over the years?
